Once an old mining town, the quaint Alpine village of Helen, Georgia is now one of North Georgia's vacation hot spots. You will find plenty of activity whether it be searching the antique shops, souvenir stores, hiking the trails, biking, playing golf, horse back riding, trout fishing, gold panning and much more.

One of the most photographed landmarks in White County is the Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound. It is located just minutes outside of Helen in the Sautee Nacoochee Valley. The Mountain in the background is Mount Yonah. The word "yonah" in Cherokee translates to "bear". This mountain reminded the Cherokee of a sleeping bear. Mount Yonah is White County 's tallest mountain at 3,156 feet.

About three miles from Helen is the community of Sautee. Whether it be horse back riding, shopping, dining, or enjoying an evening outdoor concert; Sautee has a lot to offer visitors without the crowds and traffic,.

Also located in Sautee, is one of the last 15 covered bridges that still exist in Georgia. The Stovall Mill Bridge is no longer open to traffic.

This White County historic site was built in 1895. This bridge and some of our own locals were also featured in the Rita Hayworth movie "I'd Climb The Highest Mountain"

Plan to stay the weekend, or better yet, come and visit for a whole week. There is always something happening in the Alpine Helen area.

Every year since 1970, one of the most largest Oktoberfest celebrations takes place right here in the North Georgia Mountains.

Helen's Oktoberfest Festival draws millions of visitors per year to the North Georgia Mountains. It is a festival so big we have to start it in September!

German bands playing "Oompah" music nightly at the Festhalle in Helen have people dancing to the polka and the "chicken dance".

From knockwurst and bratwurst made locally to wiener schnitzel and spaetzel, you will find some of the best German cuisine this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Alpine Helen is built around the Chattahoochee River. A Helen vacation would not be complete without spending a couple hours floating down the river in a fluorescent colored inner tube. The local phrase would be "shoot the hooch".

Onlookers have just as much fun dining from a river's edge restaurant patio, listening to the squeals of laughter as the tubers go under the Main Street bridge and hit the swift waters.

Helen is also home to a water park for a day filled with excitement for the kids.

Toast the fruits of the vine at the wineries in North Georgia.

Just imagine-fine wines now are made in Georgia. You will be pleasantly surprised. Clusters of family-owned  wineries grow across the back roads of the North Georgia mountains like vines,. They are open to the public for visitors.

Babyland General is the original birth place of the world renowned Cabbage Patch Kids and it is located right here in the North Georgia Mountains.

Don't forget to take a free tour while in the area. Adoptions are an option while visiting and spectators can even help name the newly born Cabbage Patch babies.

See Helen while riding in the back of a horse drawn carriage.

The North Georgia Mountains are also abundant with spectacular waterfalls.

Inside Unicoi State Park, you will find the twin waterfalls of Anna Ruby Falls. The waterfalls are named for the daughter of Captain John H. Nichols, a wealthy White County resident who owned much of the land in the vicinity. Among his attributes, Captain Nichols also designed and built the gazebo that stands atop the Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound.

Just a few miles from Helen on Alt. Hwy 75 is Duke's Creek Falls (pictured left).

So be sure to explore the waterfalls of North Georgia during your stay in one of our Helen vacation rentals. Make sure you have plenty of film in your camera and put on your walking shoes.

Unicoi State Park is located just outside of Helen and near all of our vacation rentals. The 53 acre lake (pictured below)

has a beach for swimming, paddle boat rentals and miles of designated trout stream. Don't worry if you don't catch anything. The Unicoi Lodge has a GREAT buffet that serves All-You-Can-Eat Fresh Trout.

Make plans to visit Alpine Helen the first weekend in June and catch a glimpse of the hot air balloons rising above the North Georgia Mountains.

Helen is home to the south's oldest balloon race as balloonists gather every year to race to the Atlantic. Pete Hodkinson, started this tradition.

Pete was also one of the four men that made Helen what it is today by giving it the Bavarian theme. Helen still honors Pete today by the Gazebo and Park on Main Street  duly named "Pete's Park".

You can usually get balloon rides in town the night before the race and weigh up all the competition. Be sure to grab your camera because this is a sight to see!

Visitors flock to view Georgia's highest point - Brasstown Bald at 4784 degrees above sea level. You can see White County's very own Mount Yonah from there.  You can also check the Brasstown Bald LIVE webcam to make sure that you are visiting on a clear day so you can take advantage of the fantastic view.

Once the site of the nations first gold rush, the North Georgia mountains still hold some treasures, so don't forget to try your hand at gold panning while in the area.
